Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT, is a family of talking therapies, all based on the idea that thoughts, feelings, what we do, and how our bodies feel, are all connected. If we change one of these we can alter all the others.
When we’re low or upset, we often fall into patterns of thinking and responding which can worsen how we feel. CBT works to help us notice and change problematic thinking styles or behaviour patterns so we can feel better.
CBT is a collaborative therapy - it’s not something that is done to someone, it’s a way of working together with a CBT therapist on mutually agreed goals.

CBT is mainly concerned with how we think and act now, although sometimes our current difficulties are related to things which have happened in our past, and so these might also be part of what we talk about.
Goals for therapy are set together with the therapist after talking things through to properly understand the problem.
Most sessions begin with agenda setting - agreeing together what that session will concentrate on. A therapist will not tell someone coming for therapy what to do or what to talk about.
CBT works best when it involves working on things in between sessions as well as during them. Tasks will be planned together.
As the therapy comes to an end we will think together about how to continue using CBT techniques in daily life after treatment.

FAQs
Do I need a diagnosis to receive treatment?
No diagnosis is needed to seek counselling. It is always the right thing to prioritise mental health and wellbeing. Therapy can help you with personal growth, as well as helping to overcome specific challenges.

What happens during a counselling session?
A session lasts for 50 minutes. We will start each session by planning together what the session will focus on, in order to work towards your goals. This may be looking at a recent situation that you have found challenging, or exploring helpful coping strategies that you can practice in your everyday life. Each session will end with a review of the session and agreement on homework designed to improve how you feel.

Are my sessions online or face to face?
Sessions are online, thus reducing the time required to fit therapy into your life.

How many sessions will I need and how often will they be?
The exact numbers of sessions needed varies depending on individual circumstances and therapeutic goals. After assessment, we will discuss how many sessions would be beneficial to help you realise your goals. Clients often find that 12-16 sessions are sufficient to see significant improvements. In other cases, 6 sessions may be what is required, whilst others may feel a more extended treatment plan is beneficial. Flexibility is key, and we can adjust the number of sessions based on your progress and preferences. Appointments are usually weekly, but can be fortnightly or as required, allowing us to build a strong and effective therapeutic alliance.

How much do sessions cost and how will I pay?
Each session costs £60.
To secure your session, please make your payments via BACS at least 48 hours before the appointment.

What if I need to cancel a session?
If you need to cancel a session in advance, we can reschedule it for another suitable time. However, for sessions cancelled less than 48 hours before the appointment, the full session rate will be charged.
